Richey Bellinger – Aug 27-29

“Glaze Basics- Theory to Application”

Workshop Description

Richey will demonstrate a variety of his thrown forms and slip decoration techniques. In addition, he will cover ideas and methods for getting the most out of glazes; with demonstrations of glaze application techniques such as basic dipping and pouring, and including more involved processes of sprayed glaze, and overlapping glazes with wax resist decoration.  We will also delve into the basics of glaze chemistry and calculation, so that participants will develop a better understanding of the glazes they are using, and gain the ability to adjust or invent glazes to suit their needs at any firing temperature.

Potters of all levels will find value in this workshop.

Richey Bellinger continues to enjoy his over thirty year passionate relationship with clay.  He has pursued complimentary careers as a clay artist and ceramics educator and is currently the ceramics department head at Portland Community College (Rock Creek campus). Richey’s work has been showing up on the national scene for many years now in juried shows, Ceramics Monthly appearances, and in books (Lark Book’s 500 Bowls & 500 Teapots, and most recently in Robin Hopper’s book Making Marks). His fascination with knowing how and why glazes do the amazing things they do has resulted in a thorough knowledge of ceramic materials and a fundamental understanding of glaze chemistry.  His experience as a teacher allows him to share his passion for clay and glazes most effectively.
