HUMMINGBIRD
Artist's Statement:
Many of my pieces are psychological portraits that explore what one feels rather than what one sees. I'm drawn to the contradictory and everchanging sides of ourselves, our yearnings and fears, our strengths and fragility and beauty. I use drawings, relief work and patterning on the surface of the clay to express some of these feelings and thoughts.
The heads and torsos are built up of clay coils that are gradually modeled into the body and head. Then I'll add the surface details. After the firing, washes of acrylic paint are brushed on to amplify the contours of the body, surface images, face and hair. It takes me 4-6 weeks to complete the process.
