Workshop Description
This workshop is about making useful pots- cups, plates, lidded forms and teapots on the wheel in a spontaneous and casual manner using red earthenware clay. We will also explore the possibilities of surface enrichment using under glaze colors and slips as well other techniques for making marks on clay. There will be slides and discussions about both form and surface from historical and contemporary works.
All experience levels will enjoy this class, some wheel experience expected.
Artist's Statement
"Working in clay and making functional pottery has never been a problem for me. I have never felt the need to dismiss or disregard the concept of function because it was something less than art. I have never found making useful pieces confining or restrictive. In fact, I find that the opposite seems true. The longer I stay involved, the more alternatives and possibilities there are that seem to present themselves. Along with the functional aspects of the piece, I strive to have the end product reflect my own sensitivity and awareness to the material itself and its traditions. The pieces that I'm most pleased with are those that come closest to best integrating the form and surface, the spontaneity and fluidity of the clay along with the object's use."

"I loved that I could come into Dennis' workshop 'green' and still get so much out of it!"
"Dennis knows, lives and teaches from the heart, soul and mind. I learned more from him in three days than I have in the last one and a half years in my clay class."
"I thought the demonstrations were extremely well done- executed with passion as well as detail. I was mesmerized. I believe Dennis could teach anyone, he is so patient..."

Wheel Throwing:
Gesture in Form and Surface
Working with red earthenware, Ron's functional pots are made in a casual and spontaneous manner reflecting the juiciness of the material as well as the pleasure of the process. His narrative, colored slip paintings that float on the surface in a gestural expressionistic style can be both provocative and confrontational.

Quote provided by former NCECA President Susan Filley
"Ron [Meyers] is one of the most influential artists and educators living today. He's helped revitalize the American studio pottery, has brought about new sculptural approaches and has singularly influenced several generations of young artists.
The NCECA Excellence in Teaching Awards [awarded in 2008] is the closest award that our country has to National Living Treasure status. Ron Meyers has advanced all aspects of our field and his contributions have historical impact. He is among the most vital teachers in the arts today and is an exceptional studio artist and Human being. He is long deserving of this honor."
